「You're the apple of my eye.」为何译作「你是我最珍贵的人」?

"the apple of one's eye"这个表达法早在公元885年,艾尔弗雷德大帝(King Alfred (the Great) of Wessex)用古英语写就的文章Gregory's Pastoral Care中就出现了。

古英语原文:[hwæt on ðæs siwenigean eagum beoð ða æpplas hale, ac ða bræwas greatigað, forðam hie beoð oft drygde for ðæm tearum ðe ðær gelome of flowað, oððæt sio scearpnes bið gewird ðæs æpples.]

莎士比亚在1590s,其剧作《仲夏夜之梦》( A Midsummer Night's Dream)中也用到此表达:

“Flower of this purple dye,

Hit with Cupid’s archery,

Sink in apple of his eye."

“the apple of one’s eye” 在《钦定版圣经》(King James Version,1611) 年中也多次出现:

原句为[He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.]

[Keep me as the apple of thy eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings]

[Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.]

[Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.]

[For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.]

在现代英语中"the apple of one's eye"最早出现于英国小说家司各特的作品《修墓老人》中(Sir Walter Scott's Old Mortality, 1816):

"Poor Richard was to me as an eldest son, the apple of my eye."

The Apple of Ones' Eye的字面意思是“某人眼里的苹果”,在这里,apple指的是the pupil(瞳孔,眼珠),大概因眼珠圆的象苹果之故。瞳孔是眼睛最重要的部分,失去瞳孔,光线就无法通过虹膜中心的圆孔进入眼内而变成了瞎子。所以,这个成语常用来比喻象爱护眼珠一样爱护某个最心爱的人或珍贵的东西,即表示a cherished person or object;sth extremely precious to one; sb dearly loved等意。
